Boeing Web & Application Design UX/UI

Digital Ascent

Going to Market With Boeing Global Services.

This is an initial concept for an online digital marketing and e-Commerce hub for Boeing Global Services. Aviation companies will be able to use this marketplace as a hub for all of their airplane parts and servicing needs…

Lean More About The Digital Ascent Project2021-06-21T17:21:34+00:00

Digital Ascent, or Boeingservices.com is a web site that serves as a single point of access to Boeing Global Services’ portfolio of aviation products and services. That includes Parts and Supply Chain, Maintenance and Engineering, Training, Flight Operations and more. If an aviation company is looking to reduce costs, drive efficiency and optimize operations, Boeing Global Services is ready to help. The future of service is built here.

Problem:

  • Multiple overlapping web assets with limited interconnection.
  • Inconstant branding and voice across multiple sites.
  • Limited customer segmentation and personalization of site experience.
  • Incomplete and inaccurate product portfolio information.
  • Incomplete and inaccurate inventory information across channels.

Solution:

  • Create a new website that will serve as the marketing hub for all Boeing Global Services.
  • Consolidate offerings to optimize customer engagement.
  • Serve up information on the complete product portfolio including integrated product bundles.
  • Create a consistent brand and voice between the new Boeingservices.com site and the three main Ecommerce experiences at Jeppesen.com, Avail.com, and MyBoeingFleet.com.

My role on the project was to build out a team and manage the project for Creative Services. I oversaw the concepting and UX/UI design for our Scrum Team, where I served as the Customer Experience Lead. We were a part of the larger Digital Marketing and Customer Experience team, which consisted of more than twenty people. I partnered with Agile Project Owners and Scrum Masters to prioritize our goals for each sprint against the backlog of user requirements, managing the workload and timelines for each team member.

FSSL Modeling Environments

Application redesign for Boeing’s Flight Simulation & Software Lab.

The CME and EMASE applications are enterprise modeling applications that are designed for use by Boeing’s Design Engineers. They will be used to design, model, simulate, and validate the next generation of Boeing. . . .

Lean More About The FSSL Project2021-06-21T17:21:12+00:00

The CME and EMASE applications are enterprise modeling applications that are designed for use by Boeing’s Design Engineers. They will be used to design, model, simulate and validate the next generation of Boeing airplane concepts using Model Based Engineering principals and the Digital Twin.

Problem:

  • The existing applications are old, using outdated technologies and languages. .
  • The applications were built and designed by engineers for engineers. There was little attention paid to the user experience.
  • The interface was primarily based on the Command Line Interface, and the commands were not well documented. There was a lot of tribal knowledge, which was not easily shared between teams and new team members.
  • Getting new team members up to speed on the applications could take up to a year.

Solution:

  • Design and develop two new software applications
    • CME – Common Modeling Environment
      • Build time – model design and development
    • EMASE – Enterprise Modeling & Simulation Environment
      • Run time – simulate, test and validate
  • Develop both applications using an Electron Container Framework which allows for cross platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) integration.  As well, this framework can be backed out of and used on the web as it is based on web stack development languages. Which are HTML/CSS/Javascript vs. Java or C which they are currently using.

Boeing Management System

A data-driven financial and performance-management platform that provides timely business insights to guide critical decision-making.

The Boeing Management System is a platform that provides a single source of truth for all of Boeing’s KPIs. It allows Boeing’s executives to analyze the financial and operational wellbeing of Boeing as a whole

Lean More About the Analytics Platform2021-06-21T17:20:43+00:00

The Boeing Management System is a platform that provides a single source of truth for all of Boeing’s KPIs. It allows Boeing’s executives to analyze the financial and operational wellbeing of Boeing as a whole. For The Boeing Company, BCA, BDS and BGS. The BMS platform optimizes business results through enhanced visibility, accountability, actionable insight and analytics. Thus helping to guide critical decision making at Boeing.

Charts and graphs on the platform are interactive and provide users with tools to annotate the charts and receive alerts when certain criteria is met. The platform also allows for users to message within the application, as well as build presentations and custom dashboards around particular programs. There is also a back-end administration feature that allows BMS product owners to maintain certain functionalities of the platform.

Problem:

  • Performance data being skewed.
  • Millions of dollars a year being spent on PPT presentations, Including staff, paper and ink.
  • Directive from Boeing’s leadership to build a proof of concept for new platform in six months.

Solution:

  • Operate as “One Boeing” on a single integrated management platform.
  • Enhance visibility, precision and accuracy through use of leading indicators and predictive analytics.
  • Align to common definitions, data sources, control limits and weighting.
  • Decrease manual data gathering and chart production and increase useful analysis.
  • Use the new platform for all presentations moving forward.

Multi Channel Terminal

Monitor and manage broadband satellite connections in the theater, in real-time.

The Boeing Multi-Channel Terminal (MCT) is a satellite communication (SATCOM) terminal designed for government and military customers. The MCT enables users to monitor and manage broadband satellite…

Lean More About the SATCOM Applications2021-06-21T17:20:57+00:00

The Boeing Multi-Channel Terminal (MCT) is a satellite communication (SATCOM) terminal designed for government and military customers. The MCT enables users on an aircraft to monitor and manage broadband satellite connections in real-time. Each terminal on an aircraft would include a modem and an antenna that would be set up for wireless broadband access. The application we designed would be installed onto the terminal to allow users to set up the terminal and administer access to any satellite’s broadband signals. The audience for this application is trained Communications Officers. As the CO determines which satellites are available to an aircraft, it could affect the flight path for any given mission.

The Boeing Phantom Works team requested consulting support from Creative Services to review the UX and UI of the platform that was currently in “Beta”. Creative Services was asked to provide recommendations for usability, design, technology and front-end platform development. Once we had the proof of concept built out with an appropriate user experience, the Phantom works team intended to then attempt to sell the product to the US Military. The budget was small and the timeline was tight so we needed to make sure that we worked efficiently and in lockstep with the Phantom Works team.

We also partnered with the Phantom Works team to design a second partner application to the Multi-Channel Terminal. This partner application would be used at a Network Operations Center as apposed to a specific platform or aircraft. This application’s users would have the ability to manage the broadband satellite connection in real-time, of any and all designated platforms that they had access to in the theater. On land, in the air, or in the sea.

Problem:

  • The Phantom works team had a viable proof of concept, “beta” version of an application that they wanted to be able to sell to the US Military. The back-end of the application was developed and in place. The beta user experience and user interface design needed to be overhauled to provide a seamless user experience and professional look and feel.

Solution:

  • Partner with Phantom Works team to update the UX & UI of the application, applying a User Centered Design process. Where our users in this case were the product owners.
